While we’d love to let everybody run amuck and simply talk for hours, there is some wedding etiquette speeches need to follow. The speeches at the wedding reception are an enjoyable part of the day, so if you’re one of the privileged people who will be giving a speech or wedding toast, here is some advice on what you should aim to cover during your time in front of guests. The list below is a guide to the “who says what” of wedding speeches.
Father of the Bride Speech
- Welcome guests
- Thank guests for attending
- How proud he is of his daughter (potentially includes a story)
- Welcomes new son-in-law and the groom’s parents to family
- Marriage advice
- Thanking everyone who helped
- Propose a toast
Groom Speech
- Thank the guests for attending
- Thank bride’s parents for allowing him to marry their daughter
- Thank everyone who contributed to the wedding
- Complimenting his wife and how amazing she is
- Thanks his parents for being great.
- Thank bridal party
- Thank his best man
- Thank guests for coming, for their good wishes and gifts
The Best Man
- Complimenting the bride and groom and wishing them a lifetime of happiness together
- Thanking the groom for asking him to be best man at his wedding
- Describe any funny stories about the groom (without mentioning anything too raunchy or any past relationships)
- An informal speech or story about the bride and groom, and why they’re well- fitted for one another
- Reading out any words from relatives/ particularly good friends who were unable to attend
Bride Speech
- The bride is lucky, she gets to do whatever she wants. The bride’s speech can be anuthign from a short “thank you” to guests, family and friends or a full on speech. She can have a similar version to that of the groom.
Maid of Honor Speech
- Why should it only be the groom’s best friend who gets to tell funny stories and sweet sentiments? We recommend that the maid of honor have a similar speech in format to that of the best man. It can be similar to the best man’s but with her own personality and style.
