Wedding blogs, sites, magazines, Pinterest…there’s plenty of wedding inspiration out there! Ideas on style, color, location, flowers, cakes, bridesmaids dresses and favors are all available via such resources to provide the inspiration you need. But let’s be clear: inspiration is not replication! While you can certainly use ideas from various resources, the key is to ensure your wedding is a reflection of you and your partner. You don’t want anything at your wedding that’s there “for the sake of” having it!
Every Couple is Different
Remember, what you want for your wedding isn’t going to be the same as what others want/had. And that’s just fine. So don’t incorporate Scrabble pieces into your wedding if you don’t play because you saw it at a friend’s wedding, or opt for retro hairstyles on bridesmaids even though you’ve never really enjoyed them. Your wedding should be a reflection of you and your soon-to-be hubby, so if you want Star Wars favors or a ska band to perform at the reception, go for it.
Tips for Making Wedding Ideas “Your Own”
Rather than being a “copycat,” you can employ plenty of options for making ideas you see on assorted blogs and sites yours. Find a concept or two you love and challenge yourself–how can you put a new spin on it? What big or small things can you do differently? Another option is to combine elements from several ideas/resources to create something that’s uniquely you.
Inspiration also comes when thinking about your personality, your groom’s personality, and what you’re like as a couple. Have the reception catered at the restaurant you went to on your first date, or play the song you heard the night of the proposal for your first dance. Throw a winter wedding because you both love to ski, or have a beach ceremony because neither of you can get enough sand and surf.
Do what’s right for you–it’s your wedding, after all! You don’t want to look back in a few years and wish you had stuck to what you liked rather than feeling the pressure of having a “cookie-cutter” wedding.
Remember, the idea is inspiration, not replication! Enjoy creating your dream wedding that friends and family will talk about for years to come.
