All it takes is a scroll through Pinterest to see all of the hot wedding trends that are gracing aisles and guest tables this year. Trends can add a lovely touch to any wedding; however, there is a fine line between being trendy and going overboard. One word that comes up often in consultations is the desire for a timeless wedding — couples want to be able to look back at their wedding photos in ten years without shuddering at images of dated décor.
Luckily, a refined eye for design can incorporate trendy pieces into an event while still maintaining a classic look that will live on for years to come. Here are some ways to embrace trends with moderation.
Think outside the box
One way to get creative is to seek inspiration from unexpected places. It’s time to switch lenses and start looking beyond wedding magazines. I get inspiration through traveling, whether it’s the bold color of a door or the sweet scent of a bakery. Stop in design stores for a browse, peruse museums, pour through magazines — you get the gist. Clothing, accessories, home décor, and other design-centric industries usually translate pretty well into wedding inspiration.
Pinterest is not out of fashion
That’s right. Forget what the naysayers have to say, Pinterest is still a reliable resource for wedding and event design. It also helps you to identify what you don’t like, which is helpful for your planner. You can easily browse color palettes, invitation design, and other details that come together to make a wedding your own. Have a keen eye and work closely with your planner to use your Pinterest board to define your style.
Keep it simple
I would never recommend going “over theme” with trends. Stick to using simple elements of a trend rather than using it to adorn every corner of your venue. Aim for a subtle and classy vibe and ambiance. Mix in some traditional elements, like clusters of candles or an eye-catching welcome table. When you enter a wedding, it should feel like you’re entering a home — yes, there are elements of what’s trendy at the moment, but overall it’s unique to your and your partner’s personalities. Trust your style!
When you’re planning a wedding, it can quickly become an overwhelming chore full of decisions both large and small. Looking for what’s “trendiest” adds to the noise — there will always be more choices and styles that pull you away from what you love the most. Forget about the trends and think about your personal style: what colors inspire you as a couple? Are you a fan of specific patterns or textures? Look around your house for inspiration to start your own trend. At the end of the day, your wedding belongs to you and your partner and, as long as you stay true to yourselves, you can’t go wrong.
