Not necessarily. It really depends on the couple and what they want in their wedding rings. If the woman has said, or said repeatedly, that she wants a diamond or a precious gem such as a sapphire or emerald, proposing with a tungsten ring probably isn’t going to go over well. However, plenty of couples use tungsten rings or even those made of wood. Heck, the Irish Claddagh ring is an engagement or wedding ring when worn on the ring finger! (The direction the ring’s “heart” points at indicates whether it is an engagement or wedding ring.) It’s always possible to purchase budget-friendly rings and buy other rings after you are married. Just do what feels right for both of you. The point is that you want to spend the rest of your life with this person–the ring is really a secondary factor. If you are still worried, have a talk with your beloved–she will likely melt at your concern about whether she will like the ring or not!
