5 Pre-Wedding Foods for Gorgeous Skin and Hair

As your wedding day gets closer, you’re scheduling consultations and makeup trials, and scrolling for hours through Pinterest in search of that perfect hairstyle. But don’t make the mistake of relying only on foundation and hairspray to guarantee the perfect look. In the months and weeks leading up to your long-awaited appearance at the end of the aisle, work these five foods into your diet for shiny locks and healthy, glowing skin.

Wild salmon

Wild salmon is one of the best natural sources for omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep skin moisturized from the inside out and are essential for that youthful, glowing look. Salmon also contains Vitamin D, which your body uses to maintain healthy teeth. As an added bonus, salmon is a great source for selenium, a mineral that helps protect the skin from sun exposure. So if you lay out every afternoon to get that perfect wedding tan (with sunscreen, we hope!), what better excuse do you need to go out for sushi every evening? Try to include salmon in your diet at least once a week.

Tree Nuts

Nuts are a great way to get the healthy fats that every cell in your body—including skin cells—need for optimal health. Tree nuts, such as almonds or walnuts, are incredibly rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients and antioxidants. Mixed nuts are a great healthy snack that keep well when you’re on the go and are high in healthy proteins. They can be high in sodium, however, so buy low salt types or buy them raw and roast them dry in a skillet on the stovetop.

Spinach

Dark leafy greens, such as spinach, are rich in Vitamin A, which is essential for skin and digestive health, heart health, and healthy eyesight. Spinach is also rich in vitamins B, C, and E, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Add a handful of fresh spinach to your normal salad everyday, sauté it in an omelet, or blend it into a fruit smoothie.

Berries

Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are all packed full of antioxidants, which prevent or delay cell damage and strengthen your body’s ability to fight off infection and disease. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants will also give your immune system a boost, helping to ward off stress-induced colds or infections. Start your day off well by topping low-fat Greek yogurt with fresh berries, or toss frozen berries into a blender with yogurt and a banana for a delicious smoothie.

Water

I know, I know, water isn’t exactly a food, but we can’t have a list of essentials for healthy skin without including water. It’s impossible to underestimate the importance of water for clear, supple skin. If you eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, you will get water through your foods, but if you eat a lot of processed or heavy foods, you definitely will want to drink a lot of water during the day (and maybe switch out some of those processed foods for fresh!). Every morning, drink an entire glass of water to start your day refreshed, and keep a full glass nearby all day to sip as you work.
