A daughter’s wedding is the most important day in a mother’s life, so it’s only fitting that you should be just as fashion-forward as the bride! Say goodbye to dull ideas about how you should dress, and focus on popular styles that will make you look and feel gorgeous on your daughter or son’s big day.
Watch for Color Choices
Traditionally, avoiding dresses in the white, ivory, and champagne color family (that match the bride’s wedding gown), black gowns (that can suggest mourning) and red gowns(or similarly “flashy” shades) is the standard. The key is to talk to the bride and make sure you are being sensitive to any color or style issues she may have. If she expresses reservation, think about subdued-but-stately colors.
Shop In Advance
Start shopping for your dress as soon as possible. Aim to have made a decision at least two months before the wedding which is just the right amount of time.
Accessorize
One of the biggest mistakes mothers make is in breathing a sigh of relief once they have decided upon their dress, and completely forgetting about the accessories. Accessories are to a mother’s dress what a frame is to a painting. It completes the picture and draws the eye in. Make sure to spend just as much time thinking about your jewelry, purse and shoes and how the whole outfit comes together. It matters.
Looking and Feel Great
Easier said than done, but it is important that you focus on feeling beautiful. Your daughter is getting married and you have earned the right to look amazing on this special day. You don’t have to match or blend with bridesmaids or flowers. Ultimately you will feel better in a dress if it fits your natural body style and is in a color that flattering to your figure. Beyond that, you should feel emotionally secure in her dress.
